The history of Zingst:

From the "Knull Villa" to the Captain's House

It is 1951. While the roaring waves of the Baltic Sea sounded no different than they do today and the sunsets could not have been more beautiful than they are now, there were a few differences. The Strandhotel Zingst was not yet a reality at that time. Instead, the captain's house, the "Knullsche Villa", was more present than ever as a place of encounter and stories of the sea.

Willi Knull, also known as "Uncle Willi", was an old sailor who knew sailing and had travelled many seas. He had set up a small ship museum in his pub. Here you could find various ship models that he had built himself. "Uncle Willi" liked to tell humorous anecdotes from his life at sea and always had evidence to back up his stories. Even though it was often impossible to distinguish between fact and fiction, "Uncle Willi" was a character and captivated his listeners with his stories. And so he had proof for everything: that he had seen the bells of Vineta, that he had painted on the seabed himself. That he once caught an "eel mother" cannot be disputed, for he still has the jawbone, even if the expert can easily recognise it as the teeth of a shark. The goose egg laid by a bantam chicken he bred is also there. "Uncle Willi" was a character. When he spun his sailor's yarns, it was often impossible to distinguish between fiction and truth.
